Awenek Studio brings individuals together with their community through art and creative activities.

Driven by a spirit of community self-help, Awenek Studio is widely recognised as an organisation that provides non-judgmental, invaluable activities to support people’s wellbeing of all ages, abilities, genders, and backgrounds – for some, a safe relaxing space, giving respite from personal challenges.

Awenek in the community

The Awenek team of artists are well equipped to come out to your space and provide art activities for community groups, events or organisations.

We offer a wide range of activities for different ages, abilities, group sizes and budgets. Arts and crafts activities are perfect for promoting mental well-being, personal development and motor skills, and can provide a focus for social events and group meetings.

Awenek Studio

Who are and how we came about

‘Awenek’ – Cornish for ‘creative’.

Awenek Studio is a Community Interest Company with three directors:

  • Rosie French (Director and Studio Manager);
  • Frances Brennan (Director);
  • and Fiona Raymont (Director).

The CIC (Community Interest Company) was formed in May 2017 by Rosie French and Frances Brennan and is based on the Rame Peninsula, South-East Cornwall.

Rosie is a talented artist passionate about social change, incorporating creativity. She is based in Millbrook with her partner and 3 children.

Frances, also based in Millbrook has always worked within social inclusion and primarily helping people with disadvantaged backgrounds to fulfil their potential.

Rosie had the idea for the studio from speaking to other families, many of whom are on low incomes, some living in poverty and struggling to find affordable housing. Her involvement in running local toddler groups meant that she was acutely aware of families who were finding it hard to fund activities for their children, especially during the long school holidays.

Working with the Real Ideas Organisation, Rosie formed Awenek Studio CIC and began to develop the idea. Frances became a fellow Director and provided start-up funding. More recently Fiona Raymont has joined the team, who, working for the University of Plymouth, has considerable expertise in providing advice to individuals on developing career options.

Awenek Studio’s mission is to provide welcoming, safe spaces for people of all ages to enjoy art, crafts, and creative activities through workshops, informal drop-in sessions and collaborative projects.

Meet the team

Creative Learning Lab

Rosie French

After studying at both Plymouth College of Art and Epsom University, Rosie went on to pursue her own art, abstract impressionist oil landscapes and illustration. Whilst raising her young family where she grew up, art and creativity have always been close to her heart.

“I have always been an artist, loving how art can express how you view the world, improve your confidence and peace of mind, and connect you to your surroundings. Art and creativity bring joy to groups and individuals”.

Rosie went on to form Awenek Studio to bring community health and well-being together through creativity.

Becky Hand

Becky Hand

Becky is another member of our team, who usually has a big smile on her face. Her background lies in media, community work, writing, and a whole myriad of other skills.

“I love being able to work with a variety of people on lots of different creative projects, and Awenek gives me the chance to do this. Everybody should be given the chance to play, create and embrace their inner child. I’m just lucky enough that I get to do it for a job!”

Chris Stone

Chris Stone

Chris is a friendly and approachable experienced artist and community creative. He was doing work experience with us as part of his studies into Community Art and Well-being and has now become a fully-fledged member of our team.

“I’m Chris, a recent BA (Hons) graduate of Arts University Plymouth. I can provide a range of art activities and workshops inspired by both figurative and abstract art, including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and creative writing. I am experienced in the use of a wide range of art media. My knowledge of both art history and contemporary art enables me to access and adapt new ideas for workshops and activities. I can also offer help and advice on your individual art projects. I believe passionately that creativity is important for physical and mental wellbeing, so I am thrilled to play my part in facilitating this through my work with Awenek Studio. “
